Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson is set to make his narrative feature debut by directing a live-action/hybrid reimagining of Disney's classic The Aristocats.
The original animated film, released in 1970, follows the story of a family of cats living in Paris and their adventures after being kidnapped.
Thompson, who won an Oscar for Best Documentary last year, will also be handling the music for the remake. He is best known as the drummer and joint frontman for The Roots, which serves as the house band on NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
The news was first reported by Deadline and has since been confirmed by other outlets such as Variety, Brooklyn Vegan, Hollywood Reporter and Pitchfork.
This is not the first time Disney has remade one of its classics into a live-action movie; recent examples include Aladdin (2019), Beauty and the Beast (2017) and The Jungle Book (2016). It remains to be seen if Thompson can bring something new to this beloved classic.
